The Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia)
… is one of only four North American birds with a tail as long or longer than its body (the others are Yellow-billed Magpie, and Scissor-tailed and Fork-tailed Flycatchers). They are non-migratory, but outside of the breeding season they tend to leave their territories and form loose flocks, often roosting together in large groups overnight. Members of the crow family, Corvidae, magpies are intelligent and adaptable.
They have excellent memories that are put to good use caching food for short periods; to protect against other cache-robbing magpies they may make a few false caches before finally depositing the food in one. They are known to use tools, including rubbing live ants through their plumage, which is thought to possibly help control feather paaisites through the release of formic acid.
They have elaborate social interactions, and some observations suggest they will express grief over another magpie’s death. Researchers have shown the European Magpie can recognize itself in a mirror, the only non-mammal known to do so. The Black-billed Magpie was once considered conspecific with the virtually identical European Magpie, but recent genetic studies have identified it as its own species.
